The problem
A sport that disappe
ars into the trees
Livelox is a Norwegian platform that lets athletes, coaches, and spectators follow orienteering races in real time via GPS. It’s a compelling product, but it depends entirely on one thing: a cellular signal reaching deep into the forest.
In the Nordics, no single mobile operator covers everywhere. Forests, valleys, and remote race venues create consistent dead zones. When Livelox deployed GPS trackers using single-carrier SIM cards, dropped signals were inevitable. Live tracks broke. Coaches lost visibility. The experience fell short of what the platform promised.
There was also a structural problem. Managing SIM subscriptions across Sweden, Norway, and Finland meant juggling multiple carrier contracts, fragmented billing, and no unified view of device status. For a lean product company, that overhead was unsustainable.
And looming over everything: the 2G network sunset. The existing tracker hardware communicated over 2G GSM, a network being decommissioned across Europe. Livelox needed a connectivity partner ready to support 4G hardware when the time came.
The solution
Finally, a signal worth following
Livelox partnered with Simplex Wireless and replaced single-carrier SIMs with Simplex’s multi-carrier IoT SIM cards. Each tracker now connects automatically to whichever network offers the strongest signal at that location, across 80 countries on a single SIM. In practice, this means a tracker running through a Nordic forest switches seamlessly between operators without any manual configuration.
All devices are managed through Simplex’s portal, a single dashboard for activating SIMs, monitoring data usage, and controlling the entire fleet. Three separate carrier relationships became one.
Pricing was a deciding factor too. Simplex charges no revenue minimums and no lock-in fees, which suits a product where tracker deployments scale with the orienteering season. Livelox pays for what it uses, nothing more. When integration questions came up, Simplex’s support team responded quickly and technically, not with ticket queues, but with answers.
The Results
Livelox tracker
From roadmap to race day
GPS tracking on Livelox is now continuous and reliable across Nordic race venues. Coaches get uninterrupted position data. Parents and spectators can follow in real time. Safety teams have clear oversight of every participant from start to finish.
The platform works identically whether an event is held in Värmland, outside Bergen, or in the Finnish lake district. No carrier-specific setup. No coverage workarounds. It just works.
Operationally, Livelox has cut the complexity of SIM management to a single portal and a single invoice. The time previously spent navigating carrier contracts is now spent building product.
The vision Mats Troeng had when he first tested Livelox at a night race in 2015, a platform where every runner’s journey through the forest is captured, shared, and learned from, is no longer a roadmap item. It’s live.
