We build and permit charging infrastructure. Cellular isn't our field, and we weren't going to pretend it was. The problem

A charger that can't connect can't earn

PulsePoint Charging installs and owns EV chargers on properties it doesn't own. The property provides the parking spaces and gets a share of the revenue. PulsePoint pays for the equipment, the installation and everything that happens afterwards.

That means the chargers have to work. When a driver plugs in, the station has to reach the network to start the session and take payment. If it can't, the driver gets nothing, the property gets nothing, and PulsePoint gets nothing.

PulsePoint's promise to a property is that the property does nothing. No maintenance contract, no billing, no support calls. PulsePoint monitors the stations around the clock and fixes whatever breaks. That promise only holds if the stations report in, so every offline charger becomes PulsePoint's problem by design.

Parking is a hard place to hold a signal. Concrete decks and below-grade levels block it, and a carrier that tests well at one property can be weak at the next one down the road. A driver standing at a dead charger doesn't call the charging company. They call the property manager, and the amenity turns into a complaint.

Signing a separate carrier contract for every property was not an option either. PulsePoint is a small, engineering-led team installing a few ports at a time, with more sites already in the pipeline. Connectivity could not become a negotiation that had to be repeated at every address.

The solution

One SIM that works everywhere

PulsePoint now uses Simplex multi-carrier IoT SIM cards in its chargers. One SIM connects to several national networks, including AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Each charger uses whichever network is strongest where it was installed. Nobody has to know which carrier that will be before the crew shows up.

All the SIMs sit in one Simplex portal. PulsePoint can see which chargers are online, how much data each one uses, and get alerted when something looks wrong. One account covers every property.

The plans are flexible. PulsePoint pays for the data it uses, with no minimums and no lock-in, and buys more SIMs as new sites come online. Ordering happens online, and Simplex ships the same day. Before the first order, Simplex ran a call to explain what makes cellular difficult and which plan made sense.

The Results

The part of the project that's already solved

The chargers stay online. Drivers plug in and the session starts. Property managers stop hearing about it. PulsePoint's team checks station status from the portal instead of sending someone to site. The property gets a revenue share that reflects every session the charger was able to run.

The setup is the same at a resort in Kissimmee, a club in Boca Raton and an apartment building in Winter Garden. No special configuration per location. No workaround for a weak carrier. It just works.

Ordering is online and the SIMs ship the same day, so a site that's ready on Monday isn't waiting on us Wednesday. And when we have a question after launch, someone actually answers it. The chargers stay online, which is the entire point of what we sell.

That leaves the team free to spend its time on the work only it can do: electrical design, permitting and getting the next site built. Doral, Coral Gables and Sanibel are next, and connectivity is not a question that has to be answered again.
