The problem
Reliable charger connectivity across varied sites
ezVOLTz deploys and operates EV charging infrastructure in a range of environments, including municipal facilities, fleet locations, hospitality properties, retail sites, and parking facilities. Those locations can have very different cellular coverage conditions, so relying on a single carrier can create unnecessary deployment risk.
For ezVOLTz, cellular connectivity supports the day-to-day operation of its charging network. Chargers need a dependable communications path to report status, support charging sessions, transmit operational data, and remain visible to ezVOLTz systems and driver-facing services. If a charger loses connectivity, the operations team has less visibility into what is happening at the site and drivers may not receive current station information.
The requirement was therefore practical: use a connectivity solution that could be incorporated into charger hardware before shipment and work across multiple deployment locations without requiring ezVOLTz to select and manage a different carrier for each site.
The solution
Build multiple carrier network connectivity into the charger
ezVOLTz uses Simplex Wireless multi-carrier IoT SIM cards in its EV charging stations. The SIMs provide access to multiple U.S. carrier networks, allowing a charger to connect to an available supported network rather than being provisioned for only one carrier.
The implementation was intentionally simple. ezVOLTz sent the Simplex SIMs to its charger hardware manufacturers, which installed them as part of the charger build. After the chargers were deployed, the ezVOLTz team commissioned and tested the complete charging system onsite: charger operation, communications, software connectivity, and the end-to-end driver experience. The same connectivity approach has since been used across more than 40 charging stations in ezVOLTz deployments.
Simplex also offers a prepaid data plan designed for long-lived IoT deployments. For ezVOLTz, purchasing connectivity at installation can simplify budgeting and reduce the administrative burden associated with recurring monthly cellular bills.

Charger status and session data flow to the ezCONNECT℠ platform, giving their operations team the visibility needed to monitor the network and support drivers using the ezVOLTz app.
